Monday, June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and we have some information from several Canadian sources.

General awareness

The federal minister for seniors has released a video about elder abuse.

The BC government provides information about elder abuse, and a place to report problems, here.

National seniors advocacy awareness group CARP has issued a call for action.

Elder Financial Abuse

The BC Securities Commission’s InvestRight page explains Elder Financial Abuse (EFA). They note that isolated adults are vulnerable to elder financial abuse but conversation can help drive change.  If you or someone you know has been subject to elder financial abuse, speak up and report it. Together, we can #RejectFinancialAbuse.

BC’s Seniors’ Advocate offers an educational video on EFA and a brochure on protecting your privacy (PDF).

IMPORTANT: the federal minister for seniors reminds us that fraudsters may go after the seniors’ payment scheduled for July 6. Seniors do not need to apply for the payment and they should not share any personal or banking information to receive it.
